About the Chamber

In 1970 and 1971 a group of Argentine businessmen participated with a stand in the Rand Show in Johannesburg. Following this participation, and having perceived the importance of the South African market from the point of view both of exports and imports, it was decided to establish a binational chamber of commerce in Buenos Aires.

As a result, the Argentine-South African Chamber of Commerce was formed on 22 June 1972, with the purpose of promoting a flow of trade between the two countries through contacts to be established in official and private foreign trade spheres in Argentina and South African, and by providing members with information, assisting with bureaucratic procedures and other aspects which would expedite their trading operations.

Among its first priorities was the creation of an awareness of the potential of South African market in local circles. In a subsequent phase of consolidation of the Chamber, closer ties were established with Embassy economic and commercial sections in both countries. In June 1980 the Chamber was accepted as an institutional member of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce; in 1986 it became one of the founding members of the Federation of South African Chamber of Commerce Abroad, and in December 1990 the chamber became a member of the Union of Foreign and Binational chambers of Commerce in Argentina.

Bewtween 1983 and 2005, several trade missions were organized. In 1988 and 1990, the Chamber participated with a stand in the Rand Show, and in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2002 in SAITEX (South African International Trade Exhibition), where, on different occasions, our stands were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. \

As a result of the Chamber's periodic visits to South Africa, institutional relations have been established with chambers of commerce and banking and business institutions, and cooperation agreements have been entered into with the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the aim of fostering a greater exchange of information and increased opportunities for trade.

The Chamber also contributes to the development and strengthening of the bilateral ties, not only in commercial matters, but also in institutional ones. Particularly, it focuses in the traditions and customs of both countries, so as to form bridges of mutual understanding. A great example of what was mentioned above is the activities the Chamber organizes with Universities of Argentina. For three years the Chamber has strongly supported university students, knowing that they will be the ones participating in and developing the relations between Argentina and South Africa.
